So, I have been heading this way unconsciously, but an FB post by a favorite Hautemama really got me thinking about what I have actually been eating etc... and I've noticed that while on occasion I will want good steak, I am good and sick of chicken, and I already don't eat pork. I find that I FEEL my best when I eat less meat.
The last time I had given up everything except seafood aside, I a) was supa-dupa-fly and b) had to end it during law school because I found a diet of french fries and tuna-fish wasn't really working for me.... I was eating like crap and have a really hard time keeping my protein up, so I was TIRED, and since I was signing promissory notes, I couldn't stick to my eating plan at the expense of my edumacation!
Fast forward 12 years and I think I have found some really yummy options that may make this much easier for me this time around. Non-meat protein options abound, but some of them can give you, as B would say "gases"! But I have found some options that seem to keep me gastrointestinally peaceful....
1. 1MIX Protein drinks @ Whole Foods. In a word YUM! About 15 grams of protein a serving with only 240 calories. Great with breakfast, or on the way to the gym for a good workout, or given my latest obsession, a kickin' Zumba class! Several yummy flavors. Hey I just discovered Vitamin Shoppe on line has 4 packs.
2. Bolthouse Farms Vanilla Latte, Mocha Cappuccino, Purely Chocolate & Chai Tea Latte. Also yummy, although a bit more protein and a bit more calories per bottle (about 19 gr protein, 375 calories) Just yummy. I tend to get mine at Whole Foods, but my local Treasure Island has them as well.
3. Isopure - Fruit Punch. So these come in several flavors, but I like the Fruit punch, and these give you a whopping 40 gr of protein (equal to 2 chicken breasts) in one 160 cal bottle. One of these over ice with a salad is a complete meal! I buy this by the case from Vitamin Shoppe. If I have a salad with shrimp, a half bottle does the trick.
4. I have these other protein "shots" that quite honestly taste kinda gross (overly sweet) but they are 42gr of protein in about 4 oz. I have been known to drink half of one and grab a salad, especially when its hot and I don't feel like eating much. I'll post the name late... it escapes me.
5. Not a big fan of protein shakes - usually too gritty, but the Trader Joe's private label is not so bad. I also have some samples of an egg white protein shake mix. I'll post when I try them. So...we'll see. I am not, however, swearing off Harp's on the grill barbecue boneless chicken thighs, or the right to have an occasional steak, but I think I am going back to the fish.....

Desiree Rogers may have improved Washington's look. Washington may not have noticed. - washingtonpost.com
Letting the Des thing go after this, but I can't for the life of me understand why people go to the FASHION Column, and then complain that fashion has no value, is dumb etc... if you don't dig fashion, skip the Style section, damn.....

Interesting Mommy moment....
So my son T, who has ADHD and is on medication, says to me today, Mom, can I not take my meds until Tuesday (when he goes back to school)? We have never kept his ADHD a secret, to me its no different than if he needed glasses or insulin, and we talk about it so that he understands there is nothing wrong with him, just one part of his brain needs some help functioning right. We compromised on him taking it today, since he has basketball and will need to focus, but sure, we can do meds on school days only. We've had a couple days without meds and he has absolutely gotten better with his self-control and focus, but he thinks he only needs it for school. So we'll see.....
To Court Blacks, Foes of Abortion Make Racial Case - NYTimes.com
This ish offends me to no end!!! Are you serious? You know when I buy this? When those same so-called Christians start amply providing dollars for the services needed by single parents! And I don't mean 'welfare', I mean health care, sufficient maternity leave without job loss, safe and not cost prohibitive childcare, well funded and supported public schools etc.... How dare you suggest that black women, and its the women because it is ALWAYS Mama's baby, Daddy's maybe, who in most cases are carrying an unplanned pregnancy, and already KNOW they don't have the resources to properly care for the child, are somehow betraying their race by exercising their right to choose? Will we ever stop being "da mule of da worl'"?
As someone whose first child was unplanned, I FREAKED out, and I had a job offer in hand, and accepted, making 6 figures, with excellent healthcare of my own, not to mention the availability and resources of my now husband! And I still had to stop and think about whether I could do this. And thank God I had a CHOICE.
Tell ya what, you don't like abortion, don't have one, and stay out of the uteruses of those who choose to make the best decision for them in the situation.... Don't try to make Black women feel worse than they already probably do (an assumption yes, but if abortion is in their thoughts, something isn't quite right) by suggesting that abortion is genocide. Its not. It is each woman's individual decision about the pregnancy she finds herself in, because I can tell you, she is not likely thinking about the state of Black America...more likely she is wondering if she can do her job, have sufficient time off to heal and nurture her child, and find safe, affordable childcare!

Don't Cry for Desiree
So really, my first thought was bitch, please. Okay, so that is my second and third thought as well. Not a good fit? What on earth does that mean? The Social Secretary is supposed to coordinate the social schedule of the White House, and she was too much of a Socialite to do the job????
Me thinks it sucks to be a fabulous, beautiful, educated up the wa-hoo, Sista these days.... primarily because there just seem to be so dayum many of us with this administration! Michelle, Valerie, Desiree, Lisa, Mona, Melody, Susan, Cassandra ...... I could go on and on, but read it for yourself.....
(Thats Obama, Jarrett, Rogers, Jackson, Sutphen, Barnes, Rice and Butts for those who don't keep track of such things....)
Embattled White House social secretary Desiree Rogers finally stepped down yesterday. Sandra McElwaine on why she was always the wrong person for the job—and how she might bounce back.
